BTS member Suga, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, has been fined 15 million won for drunk driving while operating an electric scooter. The Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office issued a summary indictment against the 31-year-old idol, bypassing a formal trial.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 6, near Suga’s home in Hannam-dong, Seoul. According to authorities, Suga was discovered by police after he fell off his electric scooter. His blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured at 0.227%, a level far beyond the legal limit in South Korea.
Under the Road Traffic Act, a BAC above 0.08% leads to license revocation, and depending on the severity, offenders can face imprisonment and fines ranging from 5 to 20 million won. Suga’s BAC exceeded 0.2%, which subjected him to harsher penalties.
The prosecution opted for a summary indictment, a process that allows for fines and penalties to be decided through written hearings, avoiding a full trial. This brings relief to many BTS fans who were concerned about a lengthy court process. Suga expressed deep remorse during police questioning, apologizing for disappointing fans.
Suga is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service as a social service worker. The 15 million won fine marks the legal conclusion of this incident.
